Should a 9 month IPP Stand ? - Answer NO
The Court of Appeal Ruled on Friday 5th February 2010 that Mr S should not have received a 9 month IPP and substituted a 18 month determinate sentence .
The case highlights the dangers of not assessing adequately significant risk or harm and the problems that clearly arose with short IPP Sentences and those who recieved them going woefully over tariff
Mr S is represented by Jordans and his barrister was Kate Stone of Garden Court North Chambers Manchester
New Framework for family support of prisoners
Jordans Solicitors LLP maintian a blog for clients and interested parties on Criminal Justice , Miscarriage of Justice , Prison Law and Human Rights matters .
It is created by our agenda of being recognised specialists in these fields and the selection of material and opinions expressed in the blog is entirely that of the author and this should not be regarded as an exhaustive resource .
The Department of Children , Schools and Families has working with the Ministry of Justice set out a new framework for supporting families with Prisoners .
The need for such support is withotu doubt the question is whether this framework will ever amount to anything more than a document , it is to be hoped not .
What now for Prison Officers ?
The Justice Committee has now published its report into the future role of Prison Officers following tkaing both written and oral evidence on the issue .
This has led the Committee to add its voice ot the call that Prison should be reserved for only the most serious and dangerous offenders so that the resources can be concentrated on such offenders .
Greater training and assessment of performance of Prison Officers is advocated . It is also made clear all officers should be offered essential first aid training .
